The first time I worked with Pedro Varela his luggage was lost. He landed in London with nothing but a carry-on filled with 200 paper buildings. He calmly opened his tiny suitcase, and unwrapped each and every one of the structures that were to form his Paper City. As he built his city I became enthralled by the delicacy of his work, his draughtsmanship, his fantasy-like architectural styles, imagined landscapes, psychedelic forests in the middle of futuristic buildings, how could I resist!
